Week 2 presents huge match-ups, two intriguing battles on air

For some Week 2 is a chance to build on forward momentum -- for others it's a chance to "get right."<br /> <br /> Whatever your team's position, Week 2 of the high school football campaign offers plenty of big contests -- two of which will be carried live over the airwaves of the Jacobs Media family of networks. You can read about all of the big games ahead, as well as features on a number of area standouts this week on our <a href="http://www.accessnorthga.com/fridaygamenight"><b>Friday Game Night Page.</b></a> This week we'll be looking at West Hall's great start, North Hall's kickoff and a huge game coming up this week in Buford -- as well as the start of the National Bank of Georgia Player of the Week award.<br /> <br /> At the start of the season, everyone pointed at the 2014 schedule and went "oooohhhh" when they looked at Sept. 5 -- largely due to the Buford-McEachern showdown, which will air on WDUN AM 550<br /> <br /> Preseason No. 1s in Classes AAAA and AAAAAA, the Wolves and Indians were expected to duke it out in the type match-up rarely seen in the regular season.<br /> <br /> McEachern may no longer be No. 1 in Class AAAAAA -- a "Week Zero" 54-49 loss to North Gwinnett in the Kell Classic saw to that -- but the Wolves are still on top of Class AAAA, and the Indians still have the kind of talent to get Buford's full attention.<br /> <br /> True, the Indians (0-1) will miss running back Taj Griffin, gone for the season with a torn ACL. But McEachern has had a week to get used to life without the Oregon commit, and, as, they showed against the Bulldogs, they are still an explosive offense. Sophomore quarterback Bailey Hockman has a nose for big plays -- passing for 302 yards and four scores in the opener -- and receivers T.J. Rahming (175 yards receiving on just five catches) and Tyler Smith (121 yards receiving) are certainly big-play threats.<br /> <br /> They will face what has been a stone wall so far in Buford's defense. The Wolves have allowed just 100 <i>total</i> yards and no points through two contests. <br /> <br /> It is the type of match-up that should have any football fan salivating.<br /> <br /> Speaking of slobber, Jefferson's offense has been knocking the slobber out of everyone so far in this young season, running all over Rabun County and Winder-Barrow in starting 2-0.<br /> <br /> The Dragons' duo of Sammy Williams and Colby Wood rushed for 341 yards combined in last week's defeat of the Bulldoggs. Meanwhile, quarterback Evan Shirreffs added 200 yards through the air.<br /> <br /> This week, Jefferson will look to continue their dominance against a North Hall team just getting underway.<br /> <br /> The Trojans will find out a lot about themselves in their 2014 opener that will be broadcast live on WDUN 102.9 FM.<br /> <br /> Returning just one of 22 starters and a head coach not named Bob Christmas -- for the first time since 2001 -- North Hall will look to maintain its own version of dominant offense and defense. And, like the Dragons, a lot of that is based on strong line play. Get ready for a war in the trenches, and we'll be there to watch it with you.<br /> <br /> There are plenty more intriguing contests set for this weekend, including Chestatee at West Hall, as the War Eagles look to bounce back from a season-opening loss and the Spartans look to move to 2-0. Meanwhile, East Hall is also gunning for 2-0 against a Pickens team that showed its run game -- led by Shannon Brooks -- is among the best in the state.
