Even in bigger pool former North Hall standout Powers still smashing records

Former North Hall standout Paul Powers has taken his prowess to a bigger pool -- and is proving just as impressive.<br /> <br /> Powers broken the United States' National Age Group Record in the 50 long course meter freestyle by swimming a 22.20 at the 2014 Junior Pan Pac Championships on Saturday in Maui, Hawaii. He broke the old record of 22.22 set by Caeleb Dressel in 2013.<br /> <br /> A 2013 GHSA champion, Powers is now a college freshman at Michigan.<br /> <br /> This is technically only the second-fastest time done by a 17-18 year old member of USA Swimming, as Vlad Morozov swam a 22.13 when living in Southern California that Southern California recognizes as their record for the age group. However, USA Swimming rules dictate that one must hold an American passport (regardless of national representation) to break a National Age Group Record, and Morozov does not have an American passport.<br /> <br /> Powers was a late-comer to full time swimming.
