Gainesville Police Chief Brian Kelly resigns

GAINESVILLE - Gainesville City officials announced Friday Police Chief Brian Kelly has resigned.<br /> <br /> According to Angela Sheppard, Assistant City Manager, Kelly notified them of his resignation Friday morning. Sheppard also confirmed Mayor Danny Dunagan and Director of Human Resources Janeann Allison were present for the meeting.<br /> <br /> Sheppard said Gainesville City Manager Kip Padgett was out of the office.<br /> <br /> "We requested that Brian come and meet with us," said Sheppard. When asked why he tendered his resignation, she declined to say. "That's a personnel matter that we do not discuss."<br /> <br /> Kelly, who was sworn in as Chief in May 2010, began his career with the Gainesville Police Department in 1996 as an officer in the Patrol Division. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1998 and Lieutenant in 2003.<br /> <br /> Sheppard confirmed the city has worried about morale in the police department.<br /> <br /> "We were concerned that there was a morale issue within the police department, yes," Sheppard said. She did not say if that precipitated Kelly's resignation.<br /> <br /> Allison confirmed the department has experienced some resignations in recent weeks.<br /> <br /> "We have experienced some resignations due to, our understanding from those leaving, is due to salary and benefits," Allison said. <br /> <br /> "We certainly take that seriously and are looking at all avenues regarding salary and benefits." <br /> <br /> In a written statement, city officials announced Capt. Carol Martin will serve as Interim Chief. Martin most recently has served as Captain of the Support Services Bureau for the Police Department. <br /> <br /> "We haven't really made any determination about what our next steps are in filling that position," said Sheppard.
