Gainesvile man appointed to Ga. State Council for Interstate Juvenile Supervision

ATLANTA - Georgia Governor Nathan Deal has appointed state Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) Commissioner Avery Niles to the Georgia State Council for Interstate Juvenile Supervision. <br /> <br /> The Governor selected Niles, who lives in Gainesville, as State Council Chairman to represent Georgia in the nationwide Interstate Compact on Juveniles. Georgia became an official member of the Interstate Commission for Juveniles when state legislation to enact the revised Interstate Compact for Juveniles took effect on July 1.<br /> <br /> The nationwide Interstate Compact provides the legal framework for supervising adjudicated juveniles when they move from one State to another. The Compact framework ensures that juveniles requiring legal supervision while in Georgia, will continue to be supervised by juvenile authorities if they move to another State. <br /> <br /> Similarly, the Interstate Compact also requires other States to notify Georgia that juveniles under their legal supervision are moving here. It provides Georgia's Department of Juvenile Justice both the authority and duty to supervise those incoming juveniles.<br /> <br /> The State Council that Commissioner Niles will now chair functions as the governing body over Georgia's Interstate Compact on Juveniles, responsible for developing its operational policy and procedures. The State Council's purpose is to advise and provide oversight and advocacy relating to the State's Compact duties and its participation in Compact activities.<br /> <br /> Niles is a former warden of the Hall County Correctional Institute and commander of the Hall County Detention Center.
