CUMMING - Thirteen businesses in the city of Cumming were cited for selling alcohol to minors during a joint operation between the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office and Cumming Police.

According to Deputy Robin Regan, spokesman for the Sheriff's Office, 44 businesses were checked out, and of the 13 cited for underage alcohol sales. Eight were cited for city ordinance violations as well.

Regan said the businesses included El Rio, Gasthaus Tirol, Marie's Italian Deli, Walmart Marketplace, Jax Beverage, Kani House, Provino's Italian Restaurant, Fox's Pizza Den, Chevron Food Mart (Canton Hwy), In and Out Grocery (Canton Hwy), Central Food Mart (Dahlonega Hwy), Country Corner Citgo (Dahlonega Hwy) and La Zacatecana.

Along with the citations, three businesses were also shut down for the night because no employee on scene had an alcohol sales permit.

"The ones shut down [for the night] were Jax, The Sonoco In and Out and La Zacatecana," said Regan.

The Sheriff's Office Ordinance and Permits Unit routinely conducts these operations in an effort to reduce alcohol consumption in teens.

"We're trying to reduce alcohol consumption in teens," said Regan. "We've had a couple of fatalities recently involving teens with alcohol consumption being a huge factor, so we're very interested in reducing that and hopefully in turn, reducing the number of these fatalities."
