Habersham places 1-cent SPLOST on Nov. 4 ballot

CLARKESVILLE - Habersham County residents will have the opportunity in November to vote to reinstitute a 1-cent Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax.<br /> <br /> The proposed SPLOST would take the county's taxation back from 6 cents on each dollar to 7 cents, as it had been for a number of years. <br /> <br /> Monday night, the county commission voted unanimously to approve the call for election.<br /> <br /> The ballots to be used in connection with the continuation of the sales and use tax will read as follows:<br /> <br /> Shall a special 1-percent sales and use tax be imposed in the special district of Habersham County for a period of time of six years for the raising of approximately $37,500,000 for the purpose of funding (i) roads, streets and bridges projects; a hospital project; a public construction project (landfill); public safety projects and economic development capital outlay projects for Habersham County; (ii) public safety projects; water and sewer projects; recreation projects; public construction project (city hall) and roads, streets and bridges for Alto; (iii) roads, streets and bridges projects; public safety projects and economic development capital outlay projects for Baldwin; (iv) water and sewer projects; economic development capital outlay projects; public safety projects and recreation projects for Clarkesville; (v) roads, streets and bridges projects; public construction projects (city administration buildings); water and sewer projects and public safety projects for Cornelia; (vi) water and sewer projects; public safety projects and roads, streets and bridges projects for Demorest; (vii) roads, streets and bridges projects; water and sewer projects; public safety projects; public safety projects; public construction project (city hall); economic development capital outlay projects and recreation projects for Mount Airy; and (viii) public safety projects; water and sewer projects; roads, streets and bridges projects; public construction project (city hall) and recreation projects for Tallulah Falls?<br /> <br /> Currently, Habersham County is one of only a half-dozen of Georgia's 159 counties that don't have a 1-cent sales tax that helps finance county government.<br /> <br /> Of the current 6 cents charged on each dollar, 4 cents go to the state and 2 cents go to the county board of education, with the county receiving nothing.
