MT. AIRY - A waste collection truck was destroyed by fire near Mt. Airy Tuesday morning.

The truck, from Clarkesville-based Chase Sanitation, experienced mechanical issues just before the 8:30 incident at the intersection of Camp Creek and Hazel Creek roads near Mt. Airy, according to Lt. Tonya Elrod of the Habersham County Sheriff's Office.

"The driver said it started sputtering and knocking," Elrod said. "He said it spit fire from the exhaust. He got out of the truck and didn't see any more fire, then it just started and engulfed."

The driver was out of the truck, so there were no injuries in the incident, Elrod said.

Sheriff's office personnel provided traffic control while Habersham County Fire Department personnel extinguished the blaze.
