SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) -- A coastal Georgia man convicted of beating his wife to death has been sentenced to life plus 20 years in prison.

Robert Lee Robbins was sentenced Monday in Chatham County Superior Court. The 62-year-old Robbins was found guilty earlier this year of felony murder, aggravated assault and aggravated battery.

Authorities have said 59-year-old Susan Robbins was hospitalized with a collapsed lung, brain bleeding and several broken bones before she died.

One of the woman's relatives initially told investigators that Robbins had been assaulted, but later recanted her statement on the witness stand and said she fell from the roof of the couple's RV in Bloomingdale.

Doctors from Memorial Medical Center who treated Robbins testified that the woman's injuries were consistent with an assault, not a fall.
