Brenau students to share campus with construction crews

GAINESVILLE - When students move onto the Brenau University campus in Gainesville Wednesday, they'll notice some changes; for at least the first semester of the year, the students will be sharing their campus with construction crews.<br /> <br /> Demolition is close to finished on four structures - including two sorority houses on the back side of the campus on Prior Street. University spokesman David Morrison says those old buildings will be replaced with brand new structures - hopefully in time for spring semester.<br /> <br /> Morrison said while there will be construction activity, the students shouldn't have any problem navigating their way around campus.<br /> <br /> "It's all fenced off, so it's not going to be any danger to the students," said Morrison. "It will be mostly done by the time they get back."<br /> <br /> As students move in Wednesday, a section of Prior Street in the construction area will be closed, according to Brenau officials. That closure begins at 7 a.m. <i>(See complete story linked below.)</i><br /> <br /> The four structures that have been demolished so far were buildings that had been bricked over during the Josiah Crudup era. Some of the original structures under the brick dated back to the early 1900s, but those structures had deteriorated to the point where renovation was not an option.<br /> <br /> This first phase of construction is part of a $6.5 million building project on Brenau's Gainesville campus.<br />
