CUMMING - Forsyth County will soon have its own animal shelter after contracting for the service.

County officials say the 13,700-square-foot facility is scheduled to open next Friday, Aug. 22, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 3:00. It is located just off Georgia 400 on County Way in the northern part of the county. The public will get a chance to tour the complex at that time, according to Shelter Manager Chris Peninger, who added, "Those who are unable to join us August 22 are certainly encouraged to visit us at their convenience to see this great new facility."

County officials said two weeks ago that the shelter was on target to open later in the month.

Once opened, the shelter's hours for adoptions will be Tuesday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The shelter's hours to drop-off or reclaim an animal will be Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Forsyth County currently contracts with an outside provider for the county's animal shelter services at a location on Old Atlanta Road.
