GAINESVILLE - Hall County Sheriff's Office authorities said Friday afternoon that the high school at the center of a controversy over school prayer was vandalized overnight Thursday.

Sheriff's Deputy Nicole Bailes confirmed that an area of Chestatee High School had been spray painted. She would not reveal what words or symbols were painted on the property.

Investigators are not sure if the vandalism is directly related to this week's letter from the American Humanist Association in Washington, D.C., demanding the football coaches at CHS cease their participation in team prayers. The letter sparked three days of prayer activity before school hours not just at Chestatee, but also at other schools in the county.

Bailes said she believed school officials were able to clean up the vandalism before students arrived at school Friday morning.
