GAINESVILLE - Perdue Farms has issued a recall for more than 15,000 pounds of a chicken nugget product that could be contaminated with plastic pieces, according to information from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety Inspection Service.

The USDA said consumer complaints generated the recall. Those complaints indicated small pieces of plastic had been discovered in the frozen nuggets. The FSIS said it has received no complaints of injury or illness as a result of the discovery.

The product under recall is the 8-oz. box of "APPLEGATE naturals CHICKEN NUGGETS" bearing the establishment number "P2617" and the "BEST BEFORE" date of "02/05/15". The product was produced on Feb. 5, 2014, with a sell by date of Feb. 5, 2015, and bears the establishment number "P2617" inside the USDA Mark of Inspection.

The nuggets were shipped to retail outlets nationwide.

The USDA said Applegate conducted a market withdrawal of the product on Aug. 8, 2014, but since the product is frozen, some consumers may still have the nuggets in their freezers.

Consumers with questions about the recall should contact Gerry Clarkson, Applegate Consumer Relations Specialist, at (800) 587-5858.
