Clarkesville approves annexation for proposed church build

CLARKESVILLE - Clarkesville soon will see construction of its first new church building inside the city in years.<br /> <br /> Christ Presbyterian Church, a PCA congregation, plans to construct a new facility just off Toccoa Highway.<br /> <br /> The congregation currently meets at the Ruby Fulbright Aquatic Center just down the road from the planned build site.<br /> <br /> In recent history, churches inside the city have selected existing structures for their congregations, thus none has built a new building.<br /> <br /> Christ Presbyterian Church owns four acres on Roper Drive, across from Picadilly Place Apartments. Three of those acres were in the Clarkesville city limits, while the fourth was in the county.<br /> <br /> This week, the Clarkesville City Council approved annexation of the additional acre, which James Irvin of Foothills Land Design told councilmembers will be used for future parking for the church.<br /> <br /> The property is located at the intersection of Ellison Street and Roper Drive, just off Toccoa Highway.<br /> <br /> Irvin said church leaders want to keep the mature trees on the front portion of the property.
