Incoming freshmen at UGA post average GPA of 3.9

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) -- Officials with the University of Georgia say the incoming freshmen class is raising the bar on academic criteria.<br /> <br /> Officials said recently the incoming class has the highest average GPA to date, a 3.9 on a 4.0 scale, and the highest test scores, with an average of 1913 on a combined 2400 scale on the SAT. The SAT average marks a 16-point increase over last year's incoming class.<br /> <br /> University officials say 95 percent of students were enrolled in Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate classes while in high school. In addition, 525 students in the incoming class will be enrolled in the Honors Program.<br /> <br /> UGA received more than 21,000 applications for fall admission. The roughly 5,200 first-year students will begin classes on Aug. 18.
