NICHOLSON - Jackson County authorities Friday announced a list of charges against a man in a domestic stabbing case in Nicholson late last month.

According to Jackson County Sheriff Janis Mangum, Sean Michael Anthony McCarthy, 36, of Nicholson, attacked a woman the sheriff believed to be his wife. It happened at a residence on Ivy Creek Drive in Nicholson on Tuesday, July 29.

Mangum said deputies arrived at the home to find the woman in the yard with serious cuts to her neck and hand. Authorities found McCarthy on the front porch with cut and stab wounds to his neck and abdomen. Five children in the home had escaped through a window and were at a neighbor's home during the assaults, according to the sheriff.

Both adults were rushed to Athens Regional Medical Center.

During the investigation, Mangum said authorities obtained warrants for McCarthy, and implicated him in the case. Mangum said the woman caused McCarthy's wounds, retaliating after he cut her throat.

Mangum did not release the woman's name but said she had been released from the hospital and was at an undisclosed location.

McCarthy is charged with criminal attempt to commit murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, five counts of cruelty to children in the second degree and five counts of cruelty to children in the third degree.

He was being held at the Jackson County Jail with no bond.

Mangum said the Jackson County Department of Family and Children Services was placing the children with family members.
