CORNELIA - New Cornelia Police Chief Chad Smith took a few minutes this week to recognize the work of detectives in his office and an officer from Alto.

Speaking before the Cornelia City Commission Tuesday night for the first time as police chief, Smith praised the work of Lt. Kevin Marsteller, Detective Marian Banks, Detective Amanda Green and Detective Scott Neumyer.

"One of the first things I want to start to do is recognize work and accomplishments of our officers," Smith said. "As everyone is familiar, we had a bank robbery. These officers here devoted numerous hours investigating this case without any help from the FBI or the GBI."

That bank robbery occurred at United Community Bank on 441 Bypass on Saturday, April 26, and was investigated by Cornelia detectives.

"It was due to their outstanding skills and their exceptional teamwork that it resulted in the arrest of this person in this case," Smith said. "I want to thank them for their commitment to this department and give them a citation for their personnel file."

The citations were presented by Assistant Chief Jonathan Roberts.

Smith also recognized Maj. Israel Segers of Alto Police Department for his work in the case.

"I, as well as all the officers up here, would like to recognize Israel," Smith said. "He played a pivotal role in apprehending this offender by utilizing his instincts and experience, and ultimately provided this department with vital information that was needed to solve this case."

Mayor J.C. Irby and Ward 4 Commissioner Tony Cook thanked Smith and the other officers for their service.
