GAINESVILLE - At its regular meeting Tuesday evening, Gainesville City Council voted to approve spending $12,500 on a pavement strength study for Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport.

Hall County will also provide $12,500 for the study; commissioners okayed the expenditure at a meeting on June 26.

City Manager Kip Padgett said the study should determine if runway 5-23 can accommodate heavier airplanes.

"...which hopefully will allow larger airplanes to come in there - not any commercial-type jets, but just larger aircraft," said Padgett.

More business traffic at the airport, said Padgett, would translate to more dollars being spent in Gainesville and Hall County.

Through FAA grants, the City has improved the runway to increase the length and to install an instrument landing system (ILS), which allows larger planes to use the airport. The study approved by Council authorized the airport consultant engineering firm WK Dickson to conduct the strength study.
