GAINESVILLE - Crews from the Georgia Department of Transportation are evaluating a sinkhole that has opened in a parking lot on John Morrow Parkway at Pearl Nix Parkway in Gainesville.

Even though the sinkhole is in a shopping center parking lot, it could affect traffic on the roadway, according to the DOT. Access to the Barry Menswear/Curves shopping center from Pearl Nix Parkway is closed, but the access from SR 53 Connector/John Morrow Parkway is open.

The sinkhole is said to be about 12 feet wide just under the asphalt and appears to be about 20 feet deep.

"We are in the early stages of evaluating the damage to the roadway. We will develop a repair plan and projected timeline as the extent of damage is determined. Please avoid the area if possible," said Georgia DOT District Engineer Bayne Smith in an email statement.

The sinkhole in the shopping center parking lot at John Morrow and Pearl Nix Parkways looks small, but the DOT says it is likely 20 feet deep.
