GAINEVILLE - The new Forsyth County Animal Shelter is slated to open in late
August with a ribbon cutting ceremony, with a specific date and time to be announced.

"Certainly the scope of this project is quite large," said Animal Shelter Manager Chris Peninger. "In addition to completing construction and getting the facility ready for the animals, we are also in the process of hiring and training shelter staff."

The new animal shelter, which is located just off of Georgia 400 on County Way in northern Forsyth County, will be operated by county staff. It will replace the current arrangement in which the county contracts out shelter operations.

Construction of the approximately 13,700-square foot facility was funded by the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) VII program approved by voters in 2011.
