Santana, Gattis lead Braves to 2-0 win over Padres

ATLANTA -- Ervin Santana threw eight scoreless innings, Evan Gattis homered for the first time in more than a month and the Atlanta Braves beat the San Diego Padres 2-0 on Monday.<br /> <br /> Santana (10-6) allowed just five hits and matched his career high with 11 strikeouts. Craig Kimbrel struck out the side in the ninth for his 32nd save.<br /> <br /> Gattis led off the seventh with a drive into the left-field seats off Jason Lane (0-1), a 37-year-old former outfielder making his first big league start as a pitcher.<br /> <br /> Called up from Triple-A to fill in for ailing Ian Kennedy, Lane shut down the Braves through six innings. But when the left-hander hung an 0-1 breaking pitch, Gattis hit his 17th homer of the season and first since June 18, before he went on the disabled list for nearly three weeks with a bulging disk in his back.<br /> <br /> Gattis drove in Atlanta's other run, as well, with a two-out single off Dale Thayer in the eighth.<br /> <br /> Lane was a journeyman outfielder with Houston and the Padres from 2002-07. He became a full-time pitcher before the 2012 season, looking to get back to the big leagues in a different position. He threw 4 1-3 scoreless innings for San Field in two June relief appearances, and extended his scoreless streak to 10 1-3 innings before Gattis' long ball.<br /> <br /> <b>TRAINER'S ROOM:</b> Padres: OF Carlos Quentin went on the 15-day disabled list with a sore left knee. INF Jedd Gyorko was activated from the DL after six rehab games at Triple-A El Paso. He had been out since June 4 with plantar fasciitis in his left foot. Kennedy missed his scheduled start because of a left oblique strain.<br /> <br /> Braves: RF Jason Heyward left the game after the third inning with lower back soreness. He was replaced by Ryan Doumit and listed as day to day.<br /> <br /> <b>ON DECK:</b> Padres: Tyson Ross (9-10) pitches for San Diego on Tuesday when they open a three-game series at home against Lance Lynn (11-7) and the St. Louis Cardinals.<br /> <br /> Braves: Atlanta heads to Los Angeles to begin an eight-game road trip on the West Coast, including stops in San Diego and Seattle. Aaron Harang (9-6) pitches the opener of the three-game series against the Dodgers on Tuesday, facing Josh Beckett (6-5).
