Hall Co. Commission approves construction bid for CI, for now

HALL COUNTY - At its meeting Thursday, the Hall County Commission gave approval for a bid for concrete for construction of a new correctional facility, with a caveat.<br /> <br /> Only one company gave an "official" bid by following the formal procedures within the county: Quality Concrete Block.<br /> <br /> According to Walt Davis, Warden of the Hall County Correctional Institute, they solicited bids at three other companies.<br /> <br /> "[The approval] needs to be expedited so we can move forward with the new correctional facility," said Davis.<br /> <br /> Construction is set to begin Monday, and the only official bid on the table exceeded the $69,000 budget.<br /> <br /> The bids are as follows:<br /> Quality Concrete Block, $69,080<br /> Power Block Company, $67,755<br /> Alley-Cassetty Brick, $65,979<br /> Humphries Concrete Blcok, $61,100<br /> <br /> The commission made a motion to approve the bid of Quality Concrete Block with an amendment that gives them 24 hours to match the price of the lowest bid (Humphries Concrete Block). <br /> <br /> Should they choose not to match that number, then the commission will formally accept a bid from Humphries Concrete Block.<br /> <br /> "I said I'd be happy saving $5,000 from the budget, but now we've saved $8,000," said District 3 Commissioner Scott Gibbs during the discussion.<br /> <br /> NEW FLOORING DELAYED AT SOUTH HALL SHERIFF'S PRECINCT<br /> <br /> The Commission voted to table an approval of funding for new flooring to be installed at the South Hall Precinct of the Hall County Sheriff's Office.<br /> <br /> "We got three bids on our own, which has been perfectly acceptable policy in the past. It's up to the Commission whether they accept that or want to put something out the public in a formal proposal," said Scott Collison, Finance Director for the Sheriff's Office.<br /> <br /> The Commission voted to expedite the process, which could have delayed the project by as much as eight weeks.<br /> <br /> They will bring it to a vote in three weeks instead. Those bids have not been made publicly available.<br /> <br /> EMPLOYEES RECOGNIZED<br /> <br /> Seven employees were recognized for excellence in their work with the county (see picture).<br /> <br /> Only four were in attendance.
