GAINESVILLE - Gainesville city school officials Thursday singled out three schools for special praise after the first public release of district- and school-level Student Growth Model results. Hall County officials, meanwhile, noted that the data is for the 2012-2013 school year and does not reflect results of the most recent standardized tests.

They say they are "especially proud" of the work of New Holland Knowledge Academy in the area of Math and Centennial Arts Academy and Fair Street International Baccalaureate School in the area of Social Studies. Each school, they say, demonstrated growth in the 69th percentile or above. Physical Science is the one area in which students did not grow at the rate that we would expect. The district has put curricular adjustments for this course in place to better support students.

They add that the growth model appears to show Gainesville Learning Academy as an area of need; however, this, they say, was due to discrepancies in student coding that have since been corrected.

The release of the information by the state includes 2012-2013 SGP results and is provided via an interactive web-based tool. The Student Growth Percentile depicts the progress a student has made relative to his or her academic peers from across the state on the CRCT or EOCT. The new tool allows the public to examine test data from the perspective of growth rather than simply achievement.
(See separate story. But, they add, the Hall County School District is supportive of the improved use of student growth data at both the local and state levels.

With this tool, a median growth percentile of 50 would indicate that the median SGP for the group outperformed approximately 50% of the peers in their particular group and underperformed approximately 50% of the peers in their group.

District level median growth percentiles range from lows in the 40 percentile range (5th Grade Math and 8th Grade English Language Arts/ELA) to highs in the 73 percentile range (6th grade Science). 6th Grade Social Studies/SS posted a percentile of 72.

According to information released Thursday afternoon by county school officials, notable school level median growth percentiles include:

7th grade SS at East Hall Middle School - 93

6th grade Math at Davis Middle School - 87

6th grade Science at South Hall Middle - 87

5th grade SS at Myers Elementary
