CORNELIA - A familiar face will be leading Cornelia Police Department into the future.

Chad Smith, long-time department member who has served as interim chief since the recent retirement of Chief Rick Darby, has been named police chief.

"I am pleased to announce the hiring of Chad Smith as police chief," City Manager Donald Anderson said Tuesday. "Chad has served as our interim chief on several occasions and has demonstrated the leadership skills and responsibility that we want to lead the Cornelia Police Department."

Smith looks forward to the opportunity to continue to lead the department.

"I'm extremely excited and proud that the city has confidence in naming me as police chief," Smith said Tuesday."

Smith said it's good to come full circle in the department where he began nearly 20 years ago.

"I started in 1995," Smith said. "The City of Cornelia actually sent me to the police academy. I've worked my way up going on 20 years. It's kind of exciting."

Smith received a bachelor's degree from the University of Georgia, and holds a supervisory certificate through the Police Officer Standards and Training (POST) Council.

He has worked his way up through the ranks during his career, which began as a reserve officer in 1995.

Smith has served for the past 12 years as Cornelia's assistant chief.

Following his hiring as police chief, Smith already has one short-term goal for officers in his department. That goal has to do with child passenger safety.

"As police chief, I want the department to become more involved in the community," Smith said. "One thing that we're looking forward to doing is our car seat program. I am going to attempt to have all patrol officers that are on the street to become car seat technicians."
