LULA - In a rare tie breaking vote, Lula Mayor Milton Turner Monday night decided to support a rezoning request from trucking terminal owner Tony McGuire of Gainesville to change his 17 acre tract at Mountain View and Highway 365 from Highway Business to Light Industrial.

Two council votes favored the rezoning and two were opposed; Mountain View Subdivision resident Abbey Carr said she was among those concerned about possible traffic problems the trucks could create.

"My main concern was the traffic," Carr said. "I think the concern is still there about how the big traffic is going to work with the little traffic."

McGuire said most of his trucks would be on the road, not at the terminal, and he would coordinate use of North and South Entrances to Highway 365 to relieve congestion. City Manager Dennis Bergin said highway access would help.

"We have a parkway that has two different points of access that will allow the transmission of traffic north and southbound," Bergin said. "There's no perfect answer here, but in this case we probably have a suitable solution."

Bergin added the property would be heavily buffered to block the terminal's view from home owners.

Council members voted unanimously to approve the Highway 365 Overlay for the project, which includes development standards in addition to conditions imposed by the rezoning.
