Parched parts of N. Ga. getting welcome relief in form of drenching rains

People in many parts of north Georgia woke up Saturday morning to the first significant rainfall in their area in more than two months.<br /> <br /> Gainesville was one of those places.<br /> <br /> Steady rains, heavy at times, resulted in standing water on many roads and in yards, overflowing gutters and a much-needed soaking for lawns and gardens, which, in many areas, were beginning to show the effects of the dry spell.<br /> <br /> Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport in Gainesville recorded 2.07 inches of rain Saturday. That's the biggest one-day total since 1.98 inches fell on May 14. As the day started, Gainesville was about seven inches below normal for this time of the year.<br /> <br /> As AccessNorthGa.com reported just a week ago, the lack of rain this summer is in sharp contrast to what was recorded a year ago when rainfall was above normal by a significant margin. (See earlier story. Link below.)<br /> <br /> The forecast calls for a good chance of rain in north Georgia for the next several days. AccuWeather.com says there's about a 60 percent chance of rain through Thursday. Temperatures are expected to move back to near normal in the mid- to upper-80s by midweek.
