ATLANTA (AP) The Democrat running for governor wants an investigation into whether staffers for Republican Gov. Nathan Deal broke the law by getting involved in an ethics complaint against Deal.

State Sen. Jason Carter for a second time asked Attorney General Sam Olens, a Republican, to appoint an independent prosecutor.

A memo from the head of the state ethics commission, Holly LaBerge, alleged that an attorney for Deal threatened to block efforts to expand the agency's authority unless LaBerge made complaints against Deal go away.

Olens' office did not immediately respond to the letter.

The commission recently announced plans to settle claims filed by three former employees. That decision came after a jury sided with the commission's former executive secretary, who claimed she suffered retaliation for pursuing the case.
