G-Braves blanked again by Bulls, 1-0

LAWRENCEVILLE -- For the second night in a row, the Durham pitching staff delivered a shutout as the Bulls claimed a 1-0 win over the Gwinnett Braves on Friday night at Coolray Field. <br /> <br /> Right-hander Nathan Karns and relievers Steve Geltz and Josh Lueke combined on the three-hitter for the Bulls.<br /> <br /> The G-Braves' offense has now been held scoreless for 25.1 consecutive innings, the club's longest scoring drought since a 28.1-inning streak from August 24-27, 2012.<br /> <br /> The second rehab start for Atlanta Braves' catcher Evan Gattis was a bright spot for Gwinnett (44-56). Even though he finished the game 0-for-2 with a groundout to third and a fly-out to right, Gattis was able to catch five innings before being replaced by Jose Yepez in the top of the sixth.<br /> <br /> Right-hander Kanekoa Texeira (L, 1-2) was impressive over 6.0 innings, scattering three hits and allowing just one unearned run. Despite that strong outing, he took the loss as the Bulls (55-44) scratched out the game's lone run in the fourth.<br /> <br /> Vince Belnome drew a leadoff walk from Texeira, and two batters later, Jeremy Moore lined a single into right-center. Right fielder Edward Salcedo cut the ball off in the gap, but mishandled it for a fielding error. That miscue allowed Belnome to round third and score.<br /> <br /> Texeira never yielded another hit after the Moore single, and relievers Carlos Fisher, Atahualpa Severino and Terry Doyle combined for one hit over 3.0 scoreless innings. However, the G-Braves' offense never overcame the 1-0 deficit.<br /> <br /> Geltz (H, 7) replaced Karns and added 1.1 scoreless innings, striking out one. Lueke (S, 6) worked around a one-out walk to Joey Terdoslavich in the ninth to preserve the win.<br /> <br /> For the G-Braves, Terdoslavich reached base three times, going 1-for-2 to extend his hitting streak to nine games. Todd Cunningham and Salcedo both went 1-for-3. Phil Gosselin went 0-for-3, snapping his 10-game hitting streak.<br /> <br /> Jayson Nix led the Bulls, going 2-for-3 with a double.<br /> <br /> The Gwinnett Braves and the Durham Bulls play game three of the four-game series on Saturday night at Coolray Field, first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. Right-hander Gus Schlosser (5-5, 4.00) will start for the G-Braves, while the Bulls will counter with right-hander Alex Colome (4-2, 3.86).
