GAINESVILLE - In case you heard what sounded like the noise of jet engines coming from the vicinity of Lake Lanier Friday... well, you're not too far off.

The roar was the result of high performance cigarette-type boats practicing for Saturday's annual Pirates of Lanier Poker Run.

The course they'll be covering goes from Buford Dam to Gainesville Marina and then back.

The first heat for the nearly 300 boats listed as entered in the event will blast off at 11:00, and will include the fastest-of-the-fast, boats that run well in excess of 100 mph.
