Gainesville man convicted of attempted murder

GAINESVILLE - A Gainesville man was convicted of attempted murder and other charges this afternoon relating to a 2012 knife attack.<br /> <br /> Derek Alan Norton, 38, was convicted of attempted murder, aggravated assault , possession of a knife during the commission of a crime and cruelty to a child in the third degree, according to an email statement from District Attorney Lee Darragh.<br /> <br /> "[The charges were] in relation to an attack upon Heather Richardson, on October 25, 2012 at a Wills Street address," said Darragh.<br /> <br /> The trial began Monday. "A sentencing hearing will be scheduled at a later date," said Darragh.<br /> <br /> Darragh said in the statement that the maximum possible sentences for his crimes are as follows: 30 years for attempted murder, 20 years for aggravated assault, five years consecutively for possession of a knife during the commission of a crime. Cruelty to a child in the third degree is a misdemeanor.<br />
