GAINESVILLE - Less than a week after demolition began on a shopping center on Brown's Bridge Road in Gainesville, bulldozers started tearing down another shopping center on Thompson Bridge Road.

The same developer - Polestar LLC -has plans to erect large grocery stores with free standing fuel stations at both Lanier Commons Shopping Center on the west side of Gainesville and Lanier Plaza on the north end of town.

To date, Polestar has not revealed the name of the stores that will occupy the revamped sites.

While the redevelopment plan for Lanier Commons was approved with no public comment at all, protesters showed up at spring meetings for the Gainesville Planning and Appeals Board and Gainesville City Council to discourage city leaders from approving a partial rezoning for Lanier Plaza. Final approval for the demolition of Lanier Plaza came at a May 20 city council meeting.
Demolition on the Lanier Plaza site began this week.

Developers estimate the demolition process will take about two weeks at each site.
Demolition is well underway on Lanier Plaza Shopping Center on Thompson Bridge Road.
