CUMMING - Cherokee County officials have seized over 350 dogs from a property near Cumming.

The dogs were found during a compliance check in the 14000 block of Cumming Highway, or Georgia 20, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

The living conditions were deplorable, according to the paper, and the dogs were housed in cages.

"The dogs were being kept in unsanitary conditions and housed in cages," Alexa Huston, spokeswoman for the Marshal's Office, said in an emailed statement to the AJC.

"Underneath most of the cages were feces, urine and dog food that had fallen through the grates."

The 357 dogs have since been taken to the Cherokee County Animal Shelter. The paper reports the dogs are not available for adoption yet.

CBS 46 reports that the owner of the property made a court appearance Tuesday, but her attorney requested the case be moved to state court.

The owner's husband told the TV station his family has raised and sold dogs for more than 40 years.
