GAINESVILLE - Economic development was the theme of Tuesday evening's Gainesville City Council meeting, with council members giving their final stamp of approval to a new assisted living facility, a new subdivision and a new road for the city.

After the proposal was tabled at Council's July 1 meeting, a plan to construct a 38-bed assisted living facility at the corner of Park Hill Drive and South Enota Drive received final approval. Even though the Beehive Homes, Inc. project abuts a residential area, Community Planning Director Rusty Ligon said it's a good fit for that part of the city.

"I think that the property at the corner of Park Hill and Enota ultimately will be developed for commercial [use] at some point," said Ligon. "But, I don't think we wanted to see commercial go further into Enota, so I think this is a good transitional use."

Councilman George Wangeman agreed, saying assisted living homes typically are not invasive types of developments.

"When you look at assisted care living facilities, you have to say that they are quiet," said Wangeman. "A lot of times people who live in those facilities don't drive and so they don't produce a lot of traffic."

Beehive Homes, Inc. currently operates 150 assisted living homes in 15 states. Based on information on the company website, the Gainesville development would be the first in Georgia.

Developers did not say when they planned to break ground at the two-acre site.

Council gives final approval to subdivision off Athens Highway

A 55-unit subdivision on Wilson Drive off Athens Highway received unanimous approval from council members Tuesday evening.

The homes will be built on a 26-acre tract of land just off Highway 129.

A 38-bed assisted living facility will be built on this tract of land at Park Hill Drive and South Enota Drive.
