Demolition begins on part of west Gainesville shopping center destined for renovation

GAINESVILLE - Demolition has begun on part of a west Gainesville shopping center which the new owners plan to use for a 42,000-square-foot grocery store.<br /> <br /> Heavy machinery has begun tearing down the section of Lanier Commons that once housed a Food Lion supermarket and other smaller tenants, including Asia Cafe. Plans call for leaving intact the part of the complex that includes Family Dollar, El Maguey Restaurant, and Crossroads Deli. The package store which sits on an "out parcel" will also remain.<br /> <br /> The new grocery store is also expected to include a pharmacy and 12-pump fueling station. There is still no word on what grocer will locate there.<br /> <br /> City officials said several weeks ago that a land development plan for the project had been approved and that building plans were "under review."<br /> <br /> "The construction schedule for the project runs from June through the end of December..." City Planner Matt Tate said at the time. "The land development permit was issued (May 27)."<br /> <br /> Lanier Commons is at the corner of McEver and Browns Bridge roads. <br /> <br /> The development company is Polestar Development LLC of Chattanooga, Tenn., the same company involved in the controversial redevelopment of Lanier Plaza, a shopping center on Thompson Bridge Road in north Gainesville.
