Norfolk sweeps G-Braves in DH

NORFOLK, VIRGINIA -- The Norfolk Tides swept the Gwinnett Braves in a doubleheader by scores of 5-3 and 9-8 on Saturday night at Harbor Park.<br /> <br /> In the first game, the Tides (40-57) scored first by plating two in the bottom of the second off Gwinnett starter Kanekoa Texeira. With the bases loaded and one out, Julio Borbon singled in a run to make it 1-0, and Quentin Berry plated another with a sacrifice fly to left. <br /> <br /> But the G-Braves (44-53) stormed back in the top of the fourth off Norfolk reliever Nick Additon. Phil Gosselin led off with a double to left and moved to third on a fly-out to right by Joey Terdoslavich. Brandon Boggs was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners with one out. Elmer Reyes delivered the first Gwinnett run with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Gosselin to cut the deficit to 2-1. After Edward Salcedo walked, Jose Yepez doubled to left, scoring both Boggs and Salcedo for a 3-2 lead.<br /> <br /> The lead lasted only a half-inning. Cord Phelps tripled to right to lead off the bottom of the fourth against Texeira and scored on a single by Borbon, tying the game at 3-3.<br /> <br /> Norfolk took the lead in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, Francisco Peguero singled to left, Phelps walked and David Freitas followed with a single to left to give the Tides a 4-3 edge. Left-hander Atahualpa Severino came on from the bullpen and allowed an RBI single to Borbon to make it 5-3, which would stand as the final score.<br /> <br /> In the second game, the Gwinnett bullpen again could not hold on to a lead, as for the second night in a row, the Tides came away with a walk-off win. <br /> <br /> The G-Braves scored twice in the top of the fifth to erase a 3-2 deficit and take a 4-3 lead. A two-out RBI single by Terdoslavich scored Reyes from third to put Gwinnett ahead.<br /> <br /> But the Tides again took advantage of the Gwinnett bullpen as they scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth off a suddenly shaky Juan Jamie to retake the lead at 7-4.<br /> <br /> Again, the G-Braves mounted a comeback in the top of the sixth. Mark Hamilton and Steve Lerud each singled off Norfolk starter Mike Wright, chasing him from the game. Reliever Ramon Ramirez walked Ozzie Martinez to load the bases. With two outs, Reyes grounded to short, but an errant throw by Jemile Weeks towards second allowed both Hamilton and Lerud to score. Sean Kazmar then doubled to left, scoring both Martinez and Reyes to put Gwinnett ahead 8-6.<br /> <br /> Gwinnett reliever James Hoyt stopped the Tides from scoring in the bottom of the sixth, but he gave up the game an inning later. Weeks singled to open the seventh and moved to third on a one-out single by Brett Wallace. Peguero flied out to left, moving Wallace to second. Phelps blooped an 0-2 pitch from Hoyt into shallow right, scoring both Weeks and Wallace for the walk-off 9-8 win.<br /> <br /> In game one, Texeira (L, 1-1) went 4.2 innings for the loss. He gave up five earned runs on eight hits, walked five and struck out two. Severino went 1.1 innings with one hit and two strikeouts.<br /> <br /> Randy Wolf started game one for the Tides. He worked 3.0 innings with two hits, one walk and three strikeouts. Additon (W, 4-5) went 3.0 innings with four hits, three earned runs, two walks and three strikeouts. Robert Coello (S, 5) went 1.0 inning with one strikeout.<br /> <br /> In game two, Terry Doyle went 4.0 innings in his first Gwinnett start of the season. He allowed three hits, three earned runs, three walks and struck out one. Jamie went 0.2 of an inning with three hits, four runs (three earned), one walk and one strikeout. Hoyt (L, 1-1) went 2.0 innings with four hits, two earned runs, one walk and one strikeout.<br /> <br /> The G-Braves were led in game one by Gosselin who went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a run. In game two, Terdoslavich was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Kazmar was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Gosselin went 1-for-1 in game two to increase his hitting streak to a season high 10 games.<br /> <br /> Borbon paced the Tides in game one, going 4-for-4 with three RBIs. Wallace was the big bat in game two, going 3-for-4 with his 10th home run of the season. Phelps was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.<br /> <br /> The G-Braves and Tides conclude the five-game series on Sunday night at Harbor Park, first pitch scheduled for 6:05 PM. RHP Gus Schlosser (5-4, 4.08) will be the mound for Gwinnett against RHP Tyler Wilson (1-0, 3.46) for the Tides.
