Gainesville man known for organizing WWII veterans' reunions dies

GAINESVILLE - A Gainesville man who for nearly 30 years hosted a reunion of World War II veterans in his hometown has died.<br /> <br /> Asa Autry, 95, died Saturday at Northeast Georgia Medical Center. <br /> <br /> Autry enlisted in the Georgia National Guard in 1938, mobilized in 1940, and served in the U.S. Army 214th Coast Artillery anti-aircraft during World War II in the Aleutian Islands, Adak and Amchitka. <br /> <br /> For 27 years, he hosted the 214th Regimental Reunion in Gainesville, and veterans from all over the country attended. <br /> <br /> The funeral will be Tuesday at 2:00 at the First Baptist Church on Green Street.<br /> <br /> (A complete obituary can be found on the AccessNorthGa.com Obituaries Page.)
