GAINESVILLE - Gainesville public works employees had a muddy mess on their hands Friday morning when the water tower on Queen City Parkway at Summit Street overflowed.<br />

Gainesville Public Utilities Director Kelly Randall said a computer malfunction prevented utilities supervisors from realizing that the tank was overflowing. He said between 700,000 and one million gallons of water spilled from the tank in the pre-dawn hours Friday.<br />

Randall said since the tank was more than full, there were no water pressure issues, so no customers experienced problems. <br />
<br />
The water spilled down the bank into the sidewalk and into the street, but no major damage occurred. Crews spent several hours during the Friday morning rush hour clearing mud from the sidewalk and one incoming lane of Queen City Parkway.<br />

Randall said he's investigating to see what caused the computer malfunction.<br />
