BUFORD - Gwinnett County Fire Investigators Thursday said they believe two young teen boys are responsible for last Sunday's fire that damaged a vacant home in Buford.

Investigators said they discovered the two boys had been trying to use the house as a clubhouse and had made a torch to see in the dark.

Authorities believe material from the torch dropped to the floor and started a small fire. The boys thought they had stomped the fire out, according to investigators, and continued exploring the house.

While they were in the basement, authorities said the teens discovered the fire had spread on the first floor. Investigators said they escaped injury.

Each boy was charged with one-count of criminal damage to property in the second-degree, and released to their parents, according to Gwinnett County Fire Captain Tommy Rutledge.

Investigators said they decided on the charge because they don't think the boys had malicious intent to cause the fire or to damage the property.
Authorities had to block Highway 20 for a short time while they battled the Sunday afternoon fire.
