GAINESVILLE - The landfill fire that kept Gainesville and Hall County firefighters busy for several hours Sunday was still smoldering and creating some smoke Tuesday. The fire is burning construction debris.

"As of this (Tuesday) afternoon, the landfill fire had about stopped smoking/smoldering," Hall County Fire Marshal Scott Cagle said Tuesday night.

Cagle said heavy equipment was being used Tuesday to try and extinguish it. A state patrol helicopter helped fight the fire Sunday.

He added that the cause of the fire "remains unknown but nothing is suspicious."

Cagle noted on Sunday that fires at the site, on Old County Dump Road, happen "from time to time." Link below.)
