GAINESVILLE - The Gainesville Police Department has received several reports of a scam that targets Georgia Power customers in the North Georgia region.

According to Cpl. Kevin Holbrook, the scammers target both residential and commercial customers by calling and requesting the customers no longer send checks in the mail.

The scammers say the victim should purchase a prepaid debit card and give the account number to the caller over the phone.

Once the account number is given, the circuit is completed and the victim is out of their money.

Georgia Power says they do not call their customers to ask for payment over the phone, however, they do have an automated, pre-recorded message that asks the customers to call and discuss their accounts.

If you feel you are a victim of this or any other phone utility scam, please contact your local law enforcement office.
