Clayton residents to vote on tax to fund MARTA

JONESBORO, Ga. (AP) -- Clayton County commissioners will let residents vote in November whether to fund MARTA service in the county through a one-penny sales tax.<br /> <br /> The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports ( http://on-ajc.com/1j93Kfw ) commissioners voted 3-1 to put the decision to a Nov. 4 referendum. If voters approve the tax, it would be the first expansion of the transit system beyond DeKalb and Fulton counties since MARTA began operating 42 years ago.<br /> <br /> The deal must also be approved by two of three surrounding jurisdictions, Atlanta, Fulton and DeKalb. MARTA officials said they expected that would happen.<br /> <br /> Clayton commission Chairman Jeff Turner said MARTA will begin limited bus service in March 2015 and full bus service the following year if the tax is approved. The contract doesn't set a deadline to start commuter rail service.
