ATLANTA (AP) -- Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice officials say the agency's regional detention center in Gwinnett County has officially shut down. Plans to close the facility were announced several months ago.

Department Commissioner Avery Niles said Tuesday that juveniles who were in custody at the metro Atlanta facility have been transferred, and state property will be reused at other Department of Juvenile Justice facilities.

Niles announced the closure of the Gwinnett facility in early December. He said at the time the building was built 30 years ago. He said officials could foresee infrastructure breakdowns in the facility, and it was time for a contingency plan. (See earlier story. Link below.)

Officials say youth offenders from the Gwinnett center's service areas in Rockdale County and southern Gwinnett County will be assigned to DJJ's newly-renovated Regional Youth Detention Center in Rockdale. Youth offenders from the DJJ service area in Hall County and northern Gwinnett County will be designated for the RYDC in Gainesville.

(AccessNorthGa.com's Ken Stanford contributed to this report.)
