GAINESVILLE - Despite the fact that he still has a year remaining on his current contract, the Hall County School Board decided Monday evening to give Superintendent Will Schofield a new three year pact.

School system spokesman Gordon Higgins said terms of the contract remain to be negotiated and will be in place for the July 28th Board meeting.

School Board Chairman Nath Morris said that the Board decided to act preemptively. "If you look at systems our size and the salaries that are being made...if we can keep him here in Hall County and working for our school system...that's what we need to do, that's what we need to do."

Morris said that was in line with the feedback that the Board had been getting from the community.

The Board also voted to approve Schofield's 5-percent annual performance compensation for the current year, something, Higgins explained, Schofield has been eligible for every year since 2009, but has refused to accept.

Morris said Schofield has a history of that sort of approach to his compensation.

"When we cut salaries, he took an additional cut in salary," Morris said, referring to something Schofield did several years ago. "So we came back and didn't give him the opportunity to turn down the compensation this time."

Morris said that the Board was in agreement with Schofield's approach to the future of education in Hall County and wanted to show the Superintendent that he had their full support.
