Moisture pattern positive as summer begins

GAINESVILLE - While Gainesville had a recent string of days with highs of 90 or above, the state climatologist noted Monday that the afternoon moisture pattern is a positive.

Bill Murphey said the pattern is expected to stay for a while.

"We've had afternoon thundershowers in the picture. I think we're still going to see a good bit of that in this type of pattern that we're in right now as long as the Gulf of Mexico stays open like it is," Murphey said.

While it may be a more normal summer season for high temperatures in our area, Murphey said the precipitation pattern is good for area lakes and rivers.

"We had some good rainfall during April, and then even since then we've had good periods of on and off frontal systems come through and give us some periods of precipitation. This summer we've started out nice. The gulf has been pretty open," Murphey said.

As we reported over the weekend, last summer was unusually cool in north Georgia.

While the Climate Prediction Center forecast for the next three months calls for above normal temperatures for the state, Murphey said it's more typical for our summers.
