SMYRNA, Ga. (AP) -- Cobb County police have identified a man who drowned in the Chattahoochee River over the weekend.
Department spokesman Mike Bowman said in a statement that 25-year-old Omar Fraire of Smyrna was pronounced dead at Emory Adventist Hospital after his body was recovered from the river Sunday evening.

Authorities have said Fraire jumped into the river because he thought a child who was with his group was struggling in the water and needed help.

Fire officials have said the boy who was with Fraire's group was found in another portion of the river with another group of people.

WSB-TV reported the boy was taken to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite because he swallowed a large amount of river water.
