Summer off to a scorching start, unlike last year

GAINESVILLE - The high in Gainesville Saturday was 92, the fifth 90+ reading at the airport this year - just as many as was recorded in all of 2013.<br /> <br /> You may recall that last summer was an unusually cool and wet one. (See earlier story. Link below.)<br /> <br /> Saturday's 92 at Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport was not only the fifth 90+ reading this year but the fifth straight day of 90 or above in Gainesville. It was also 92 on Thursday, 91 on Tuesday, 90 on Wednesday and 93 on Friday. Those readings are six-to-seven degrees above normal for this time of year.<br /> <br /> State climatologist Bill Murphey said at the end of summer last year that it had been the the third-wettest and 16th-coldest summer on record in Georgia.
