Habersham honey farm stop on Georgia Mountain Farmers Tour

CLARKESVILLE - The Georgia Mountain Farmers Tour kicks off next weekend, and a Habersham honey farm is a stop along the way.<br /> <br /> The Mountain Honey Farm is the largest single employer in the state, but their workers aren't humans, they're bees. The bees are vital to farming, according to owner Virginia Webb.<br /> <br /> "The honey bees are very important because they pollinate over 80 percent of our fruit, vegetables, legumes and nuts," Webb said. "The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that honey bees pollination in the United States, the work that they provide through pollination, is estimated at $15 billion every year to our agricultural industry."<br /> <br /> Webb and her husband run the farm. She says there are two honey seasons: early Spring wildflowers nectar and their premium honey, Summer Sourwood nectar.<br /> <br /> "Sourwood here in north Georgia has just started to bloom, and will bloom through the month of July," Webb said.<br /> <br /> Webb says the tour features a variety of organic farming, not just honey.<br /> <br /> The tour is set for June 28-29, with visiting hours from 1 to 6 p.m. More information about the tour is available on the Georgia Mountains Farmers Network blog, which is linked below.<br />
