GAINESVILLE - A new grassroots initiative has been launched by Republicans in Hall County with a "get out the vote" message.

Garrett Wiley, a Hall County native who is the Regional Director for the Georgia Republican Party, says he has, for the past couple of weeks, been in contact with some of the members of the Hall Republican Party and the Republican Women of Hall concerning the effort.

"I, as well as some of the Teen Republicans from Flowery Branch High School, have been knocking on doors in the area, taking surveys, and encouraging everyone to get out and vote for our Republican candidates," Wiley said. "As you all know, the demographics of Georgia are changing rapidly and we are gradually shifting in to what some would call a 'purple' state. We might not be there just yet but it is liable to happen if we don't implement some of the same tactics used to elect Barack Obama in 2008."

The initiative is focusing on the two races getting the most attention in the state right now: the November showdown over the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Saxby Chambliss and the governor's race.

Wiley says the only way to keep Democrats from capturing the two posts is to "actually get out and talk to swing voters, 'soft' Democrats, and 'soft' Republicans. We have to convince them that even though they might not be 100% on board with our Republican nominee, he is still better than the Democrat."

Wiley says this is the largest Grassroots movement in Georgia since 2006.

"Our goal is to recruit volunteers, knock on over 600,000 doors and make over one million phone calls before the November elections and we can't do that without strong conservatives in our community. We are in the process of establishing an office in the Hall County area that will be funded by the (Georgia Republican Party), but will be completely open to any Hall GOP member (who) wants to be involved. The Georgia GOP has plenty of resources including voter data, call centers, yard signs, and candidate literature that are all for our county's use."

Wiley says he is looking for some "enthusiastic conservatives" to volunteer to help with the initiative. "Even if you can only commit to a couple of hours out of your busy week, it will still be making a huge difference for this 'must win' region that we live in. Also, if anyone knows of a student/graduate (who) wants to intern for the summer or up to November, please let me know."

Wiley can be reached at (770) 718-7136 or [email protected]

Kris Yardley, Chairman of the Hall County Republican Party, said of Wiley's efforts "We welcome Garrett and the grassroots initiative to Hall County, and we're glad to have this additional local support from the (Georgia Republican Party).
