GAINESVILLE - Plans are moving ahead for the redevelopment of a part of a west Gainesville shopping center.

City planning officials say a land development plan for Lanier Commons, at the intersection of Browns Bridge and McEver roads, has been approved. Matt Tate adds that the building plans "are under currently under review."

The proposed use is for a 42,000-square-foot grocery store with pharmacy and a 12-pump fueling station. As reported earlier, the existing Family Dollar store, El Maguey Restaurant, and Crossroads Deli and the package store on an out-parcel at the site will remain. Everything else - the old Food Lion location, a unit now housing Asia Cafe, and other units - will be demolished to make room for the new store and fueling center.

"The construction schedule for the project runs from June through the end of December..." Tate added. "The land development permit was issued (May 27)."

The developers, Polestar Development LLC of Chattanooga, Tenn., have not said what grocery store chain might locate there once the project is finished. Polestar is the same company involved in the controversial redevelopment of Lanier Plaza, a shopping center on Thompson Bridge Road in Gainesville.
