HINESVILLE, Ga. (AP) -- Veterans are celebrating this week the opening of a new Department of Veterans Affairs outpatient clinic in Hinesville.

WJCL-TV reports the new building will bring more medical experts to the region and also provide mental health assistance.

For the past three years, a temporary clinic could only see about 2,500 veterans a year. Officials say the new site can serve 5,000 more veterans a year.

Hinesville Mayor James Thomas says there are almost 11,000 veterans in the area.

The opening comes as wait times at VA clinics across the country face congressional scrutiny. A federal audit this week found that more than 57,000 veterans nationally have been waiting up to three months for medical appointments.
