GENEVA, Ga. (AP) -- The FBI says a man faces charges after authorities say he fired at a Georgia State Patrol helicopter in Talbot County.

James Fryer was set to have an initial court appearance Thursday in Columbus. It wasn't immediately clear whether Fryer had a lawyer.

The FBI says the helicopter was operating over a home in Geneva as part of the Governor's Marijuana Eradication Task Force when the crew heard gunshots and saw a man in what appeared to be a shooting stance. The crew took evasive action and contacted law enforcement on the ground.

Once the helicopter landed, damage to its main rotor blades was discovered.

Law enforcement agents went to the residence and found the 59-year-old Fryer outside the home and visibly upset. Fryer was charged with destruction of aircraft.
